What it is
Global Compact is an initiative developed by the United Nations (UN), aiming to mobilize the international business community to adopt, in their business practices, the fundamental values internationally accepted regarding human rights, labor relations, environment and corruption combat, reflected in 10 principles.
Principles
- Companies must support and respect the protection international human rights.
- Companies must guarantee that will not violate this rights.
- Companies must support the freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective negotiation.
- Businesses should uphold the elimination of all forms of compulsory work.
- Businesses should uphold the effective abolition of child labor.
- Businesses should eliminate discrimination at work.
- Businesses must support the preventive approach against environmental challenges.
- Companies must develop initiatves to promote a higher environmental responsability.
- Businesses must encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies.
- Companies must defeat corruption in all its forms, including extortion and bribes.
Objective
The Global Compact seeks to provide guidelines for the promotion of sustainable development and citizenship through committed and innovative corporate leaders.
What a signatory company must do
- To inform employees, shareholders, consumers and suppliers of its adherence to Global Compact;
- To Incorporate Global Compact Principles in the mission of the company;
- To include de commitment with Global Compact in its annual report and other documents released by the company;
- To publish press-releases to turn the commitment public.
